You don’t need to be a master sculptor or a texture wizard to create characters that captivate. With Poser 13’s intuitive tools and a few creative principles, anyone can build characters that feel alive.
Start with a Story, Not a Shape
Before you decide on any pre-made characters, make any tweaks or choose a costume ask yourself: Who is this character? What drives them? Think about their life as this can guide the choices you make. The physical details you add will say something about who they are.

Select Your Base
Most people will load a figure from Poser’s library (e.g., La Femme, L'Homme, or any third-party character). Morph packs are especially useful to have for these figures as they will help you get to your desired result faster but you don't have to rely solely on them. There are many ways to make your character stand out such as mixing pre-made morphs and textures across products, using several character morphs and combining them or editing the ready-made textures to add your own special touch.

Embrace Imperfection
A lot of the ready-made characters have perfect symmetry and flawless skin. Real people don't, so adding imperfections like asymmetry or scars will visibly shape your character's personality. Giving them specific accessories that tie in with the storytelling is also another way to create depth.

Be Consistent
You need to be mindful of any changes in proportions, style or personality across scenes as they tend to break immersion and confuse the audience. Make sure you have a consistent reference for their anatomy, outfits and maybe some of their expressions and save your character not just once but in several different versions so you can go back if needed.

Make Your Characters Feel Real
Flat expressions and awkward stances or posture don't convey any emotion or intent to serve the story and can make your characters look like mannequins. Posing and body language tell a whole story in themselves and can be used creatively for storytelling.

Finally, remember: the most unforgettable characters aren’t perfect—they’re believable. With intention and imagination, Poser 13 becomes more than software—it becomes your stage for storytelling.
